Based on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. When two hungry, misbehaving siblings are sent into the forest to pick berries, they stumble upon a magical gingerbread house inhabited by an evil witch. They must use their wits to vanquish her.

Based on the story of Susanna and the Elders from the biblical Book of Daniel (Apocrypha) and considered one of the greatest American operas in the canon, this masterpiece is presented in celebration of the composer's 100th birthday and the American Semi-quincentennial (250th).
